Ussurian pear (Manchurian pear, Harbin pear)
Manchurian pear (Ussurian pear, Siberian pear tree) - Pyrus ussuriensis.
An ornamental tree with edible fruits. An adult plant is 10-15 m tall, with a dense, wide crown in the shape of a pyramid and a dark, almost black trunk. The leaves are ovoid, dense, shiny, dark green, turning crimson-red in autumn.
The flowers are white, large (up to 4 cm in diameter), with a strong smell, on long peduncles, collected in inflorescences of 5-10 pieces.
Blooms before the leaves bloom for 5-9 days. (They are pollinated only by pollen from another tree, which explains the absence of fruits in solitary trees).
Fruits up to 5 cm, varied in shape and color, with tart pulp. The high frost resistance of this species makes the Ussurian pear especially valuable for northern regions, and its relatively small size allows it to be used in small gardens and squares, in single and group plantings, in hedges.
Easily propagated by seeds. It is best to sow in the fall. For sowing in the spring, the seeds are stratified for 2-4 months at a temperature of 0+5°C in a refrigerator in wet sand.
Planted in a permanent place in soil with good drainage, since the pear does not tolerate even short-term stagnation of water.
